Constance Hargrave

Biography

Dr. Constance Hargrave is a professor of educational technology and human computer interaction at Iowa State University. She is also the director emerita of Iowa State University Science Bound, where she served for 11 years.

Hargrave has leveraged her university professorship to extend and further college access to students of color with her work directing Science Bound. Nearly 1,000 students have participated in Science Bound during Hargrave’s tenure; more than 500 earned 4-year college scholarships to study in STEM fields, and nearly 100 have graduated as engineers, scientists, and technologists.

Dr. Hargrave’s scholarship centers on the design, development, and implementation of informal STEM learning environments for students of color. At the nexus of this scholarship is Hargrave's 11-year leadership of the ISU Science Bound program which resulted record levels of sustained student engagement, college matriculation, and STEM degree completion. Her current work examines institutional and structural factors that impact opportunities in higher education among marginalized populations. 

The recipient of numerous awards, Hargrave’s instructional, research, and outreach innovations have been recognized by the ISU Alumni Association, the Iowa Governor’s STEM Council, and Excelencia in Education.
